Last May, Dr. A.X. (Lex) van Naerssen (Indonesia, March 9, 1941) passed away. He was not so much an activist, but foremost an opinion maker in scientific and gay activist circles. As a scientist at the Psychology department of the University of Utrecht, he made the subject Sexology relevant to the emancipation of homosexuals, pedophiles, and several other variations in the realm of sex.

Many young men who had left to fight for their country did not return to their often small places of birth, but tried to make it in one of the big cities. The freedom and independence of family supervision these boys wanted, indirectly was one of the reasons for the rise of an initially modest gay movement.

Stormé DeLarverie, a pioneer queer activist and longtime member of the Stonewall Veteran’s Association, died recently. DeLarverie was 93 years old. In a statement the Bronx LGBTQ Center called DeLarverie the “Rosa Parks” of the gay rights movement.

Not really unexpected, Fabiola died, sixty-six years old, on Sunday morning, the 27th of January at the Hospice Sint Jacob in Amsterdam. Fabiola was the stage name of Peter Alexander van Linden (Weilheim, Germany, May 26, 1946 - Amsterdam, January 27, 2013), who has been a well-known personality in Amsterdam since the sixties as performance artist and “living work of art.”

Jeanne Manford, the founder of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, an American organization) and an all-around pioneering straight ally in the GLBT rights movement, has died at 92. Manford died at her Daly City, Calif. home and had been in declining health for some time, daughter Suzanne Swan confirmed.

On July 5, Gerrit Komrij died after a short illness in the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis in Amsterdam. Mr Komrij was born on March 30, 1944 in Winterswijk, and moved to Amsterdam in 1963, where he read Dutch and Literature, which he left unfinished. After a year in the capital he met his lover Charles Hofman. They moved in together in 1967, and Gerrit Komrij shared the rest of his life with him.

Rudi van Dantzig died aged 78 years old after along sickbed. He’s celebrated as an inspiring choreographer, a pioneer of the Dutch dance-theater, writer and very amiable human being. Rudi van Dantzig is considered one of The Netherlands’ most important choreographers. Together with Hans van Manen and Toer van Schayk he put Dutch ballet on the international map. Van Dantzig made over 50 choreographies, mainly for Het Nationale Ballet, which are being performed all over the world.

In the first half of the eighties I got to know Paul Wierks, at first just as a barkeeper but after a few years more personally as well. I had discovered the Warmoesstraat and after visits to the Cockring and the Argos I also found the Eagle, which had a wilder, hornier reputation than the Argos where S&M in those days often seemed to stand for “Stand and Model.”
