Whether it’s the present, or the Victorian Age, or in this case much longer ago, it’s always about the same thing: a young guy discovers men’s sex with a more mature guy and more or less willingly turns into the sex toy of a range of other men.

Small is beautiful. This is an expression which doesn’t figure in the vocabulary of most queer men. Nonetheless it forms an excellent description of the “Male Nudes Indexx,” recently published by Feierabend Verlag. The book measures 13x13 centimeters, but since it’s five centimeters thick and comprises 700 pages (according to the publisher) it contains hundreds of photographs of the male nude. In contrast with Taschen’s “The Male Nude,” which was reprinted last year and gives an overview of the history of male photography, “Male Nudes Indexx” is dedicated to contemporary photographers only and includes works by seventy artists.

Jeb’s “A Metropolitan slave Anthology”, a compilation of rather heavy SM stories, illustrated by Beau, was published in 1993. The artist depicts men who are willingly abused, chained, flogged, branded and fisted in eleven sketchy back and white line drawings. For a second volume, which appeared three years later, the subject matter basically remained the same - with the addition of scat, but Beau had however chosen for a different style, dominated by large grey and black patches.

It doesn’t happen very often that a new photographer of the male nude presents himself with a beautiful photo book. Unfortunately it seems that the few publishers who are specialized in this kind of photo books, rather like to hang on to artists whose earlier work already turned out to be successful, instead of giving new talent a chance. Therefore it came as a big surprise when we recently received a copy of “Maskulino” by Páriz, a Mexican photographer who, it seems, has self-published a choice of his photographs. Páriz (1958) studied law and worked as a corporate lawyer for some years.

Early February the seventh edition of the "Gay Map Amsterdam" was published. This useful guide to Amsterdam's gay life has a tradition of cover pictures by well-known photographers. This year's cover guy was photographed by Henning von Berg. Von Berg is no stranger in Holland. Mister B exhibited a selection from his photographs in 1999 and the recently published edition of the yearbook "Gay 2004" contains an extensive portfolio dedicated to his work.

Las summer I had lunch with the American gay publisher Winston Leyland. Of course I asked him when a new issue of Meatmen would be published. Meatmen is a series of Anthologies of Gay Male Comics, which Leyland has edited for some decades now. He told me he was preparing a new volume and it would be a "Special SM Comics Edition", just as volume 24. It took some months before Meatmen 26 was actually published, but a few weeks in 2004 it finally landed on my desk.

In 1999 Bruce Weber published his beautiful Chop Suey Club covering four years in the boyhood of Peter Johnson in some 200 pictures. Weber is not the only photographer catching his fascination for a boy in a book. A few years after Chop Suey Club Reed Massengill’s Brian: A Nine-Year Photographic Diary appeared. Recently this book resurfaced again in Dutch bookstores at a much nicer price than when it first came out. In his annotations in Chop Suey Club Weber wrote that Peter at first had to overcome some shyness to appear in front of the camera in his birthday suit.

The second edition of Euro Men Jour-nal for instance, a Polish glossy, is completely devoted to Kurt Joachim Foerster. This pornographer has already several dozens of movies to his name and Playing Games brings together the photos made during the shooting of his latest production in South America. Gays have the reputation of being softies, who in their youth did nothing more than play with dolls and later in life entertain overheated fantasies of dirty games played by tough guys under the shower after another sweaty football game.
