Nowadays, films in which gays play a lead or supporting role are no exception. Even the dream factory Hollywood has embraced gay love. And it did so successfully, as evidenced by the enthusiastic reviews “Brokeback Mountain” got over ten years ago and the commercial profits from the movie.

Someone once asked a very young Maurice Heerdink what he wanted to be when he grew up. “A millionaire or an artist,” was the answer. “Why didn’t I become a millionaire?,” the now nearly sixty-year-old sighs in the recently published book “The Art of Maurice Heerdink.” It becomes clear from the publication of this retrospective that one of the futures Heerdink saw for himself in his youth did come true.

Earlier this year, René Smith showed drawings, paintings and collages under the title “Manorama” at the Bureau of General Services - Queer Division in New York. On the occasion of this exhibition, Abi wrote on gayletter.com: “When I saw this body of work for the first time, I got the impression that it was created by a gay man

Mid-May, the opening of the exhibition “Jean Boullet: Passion et Subversion” took place at gallery Au Bonheur du Jour in Paris, which shows paintings, drawings, books and letters by this French artist. His work is very homo-erotic, and a catalogue of 320 pages was published on the occasion of the exhibition. The exhibition is open till July 20.

Since a few years there is, especially in the United States, increasing dismay over gay teenagers committing suicide because they can’t take the horrible teasing and bullying anymore. The case of the eighteen-year old Tyler Clementi in particular appears to have opened many people’s eyes. Before he took off for university Tyler came out to his parents. His father is said to have been ok with it and supported him completely, while his mother basically rejected his sexual orientation.

Students are popular lust objects and that’s not very surprising because they’re young and, as John Butler writes in his preface to “Teacher is the Best Experience” (2007), “most are probably horny.” As the title of Butler’s novel indicates, there are also the teachers, who are “hiding their libido behind textbooks and reading glasses, and asking the kids to stay behind for ‘extra credit,’” according to the blurb of the anthology “Dorm Porn 2" (2007).

When I come across something really surprising amidst the hundredth Bel Ami book, Howard Roffman’s fiftieth twink collection and the umpteenth issue of “XYfoto” with photographs by Sean Bentz in the male photography section of the bookshop, that’s truly a joy. I was given such a joy when I noticed Karim Konrad’s “Berlin Gay Mates.” It’s not a large book, but with 368 pages it’s a fat book. And then to realize that there are even more photographs in it!

About one and a half years ago I wrote an article for Gay News about Hollywood hunk Garrett Hedlund on the occasion of his then latest movie, “Four Brothers.” Although I only claimed that Hedlund is extremely good-looking and didn’t make any suggestions about his sexual preference, after the publication on our website a discussion flared up about whether Hedlund might be gay or not.

It’s probably a secret fantasy of many a queen: to innocently wander through a park and all of a sudden spot a very large endowed gentleman seductively playing with his swollen member. This is what happens to the young Pero Coresma in “Jungle Cruisers” when he wanders around Rio de Janeiro’s Tijucia National Park. After hesitating for a moment Pero decides to approach the dark hunk and soon his lips enclose the impressive tool. Of course soon after it’s his ass’ turn. Pero doesn’t mind it at all when Denis Torres decides to get involved.

At least once in his life every healthy queen has descended a staircase and, while moving his hands languidly around his face, proclaimed: “I'm ready for my close-up, Mister DeMille.” A lot less gentlemen will have dared to tell the Italian photographer Giovanni just as light-hearted that they’re ready for their close-up. This is because Giovanni is specialized, not in portraits of faces, but in pictures of a, just as important, but much more intimate part of the male physique.

Outside it’s cold and grey, and even though the heater provides a comfortable warmth inside, is was a true pleasure when the mailman delivered the fifth issue of “XYfoto” recently. This issue is in its entirety devoted to guys in summer, since “It’s always summer in San Diego!,” as the cover screams. And San Diego is the hometown of both the editorial staff of “XYfoto” and photographer Sean Bentz. The editors again selected works by Bentz, which makes this the third issue to pay attention to his photographs.

By now they have become unassailable icons of male virility, the Parisian rugby players, these Stadium Gods. It all started a few years ago with beautiful calendars, next came the “making of...” DVDs, and finally a large number of these sensual portraits were collected in a sumptuous photo book last year, which in the meanwhile can be found on many queer coffee tables and bedside stands. The German edition sold out within a year, but fortunately some months ago an American edition was released.

Unless something went terribly wrong at the last moment John Singleton’s (director of “2 Fast 2 Furious”) latest movie will have been released by mid October. “Four Brothers” is about four brothers (duh) who, after their mother got killed during the robbery of a small deli, decide to track down the killer in their own way. And when they get him they will settle the score swiftly. Because what idiot would kill the sweetest woman on earth who just happened to be shopping?

If my information is correct, “Dieux du Stade” has been one of the best-selling gay photo books of the past months. But even if this isn’t true, this book with photographs of the beautifully rugged French rugby players and their companions is definitely one of my own favorites. François Rousseau was able to let these handsome athletes pose for his camera in an esthetic but also very erotic way.

Although many men visit the websites connected with Gay News, the primary concern of several people involved with this paper is the production of the printed version. This doesn’t cause problems because others are more interested in all the digital possibilities. And it doesn’t mean either that those printed matter buffs are just digital laymen, but sometimes it does lead to a one-sided bias towards books and magazines.

On August 25 the first edition of a Dutch gay encyclopedia was introduced. The interest was overwhelming, and La Strada would never have been able to accommodate all these people. Therefore the presentation was held at Restaurant 1870 in Amsterdam’s Spuistraat. But it was still crammed. Almost everybody who has been anybody in the Dutch gay scene during the last decades had made an appearance. Undoubtedly to see immediately if they had reached eternal fame by inclusion in the encyclopedia.

After I’d glanced through “Lads” for just some five minutes, I wanted to eulogize on the Boy. On his seductive eyes and his tender, kissable mouth. On his hairs and the nape of his neck. On his ears. On the jeans which covers him. On his muscles. On his chest, his stomach, his balls and his suckable dick. On his buttocks, of course. And on his vulnerability and his arrogance. On his radiant smile and his arrogance. And on his so-called innocence. On his horniness. For short: on the Boy.

The day before I had to hand in this article, I visited an exhibition of photographs by Cor Heynen at Mister B. This Dutch artist captures the world of leather and S&M in dark black and white pictures, in which he uses models who are definitely at the other side of thirty. Heynen doesn't make slick pictures, but raw images which seem to be taken from real life.

In the May issue of Gay News I reviewed Joe Phillips' comic book "The Adventures of a Joe Boy, Vol. 1". In this article I mentioned in passing Phillips' "For the Boys," which was published at the same time. Now it's time to take a closer look at this collection of drawings. Last year, my colleague, Rob Blauwhuis, started his review of Phillips' first book, "Boys Will Be Boys," with a reference to the hidden erotic sultriness between superheroes such as Batman and Robin.

Which young queer guy didn't dream that the heroes of his boys' books and comics would go a little further than some innocent romping or a friendly arm around a pal's shoulder? In my youth I was addicted to the series The Hardy Boys by Franklin W. Dickson. I always imagined these teen detectives, who were a little bit older than this avid reader of their adventures, as very handsome American boys.

Call me old-fashioned, but personally I think a hand written letter or postcard is much more intimate to send or to receive - especially when the postman turns out to be a hunk - as electronic mail. I recently visited my favourite gay bookshop to keep my postcard collection up to the mark. In there I found a new range of pretty sketched postcards made by Sven de Rennes.

How far can one go in the exploitation of a success formula? You only have to see the ongoing production of Bel Ami to know the answer. Very far! Let's take a look at the video (or, as they say in the 21st century, the DVD) productions of Bel Ami. Apart from the regular releases, they produce a lot of spin-offs. In the series Personal Trainers, which shows how the celebrated Bel Ami stars pass on their erotic knowledge to newcomers in the business, counts at least seven DVDs already.

Recently the mail contained the first issue of XYfoto, an off-spring of the famous, exciting gay guys glossy XY. What a pleasure! This first issue is dedicated to the pictures of Sean Bentz, a photographer who was an intern in the White House during the administration of the elder Bush. He had the sense however to leave the gray suits of the American capital behind, and exchange them for the much more colorful boys of San Diego, the home base of XY Magazine and one of the largest naval ports in the world.
