Anniversaries are celebrated with gusto in many COC departments. Some even considered it a good idea to write down their own history and publish a book for educational and entertainment purposes. At best a few dates, including the formation, are recorded, as well as some memories from important events. Usually it contains the acquisition of the housing, and sometimes a beloved person - a commendable director or a prominent bar owner - is put in the limelight.

Everyone knows the happy little figures by Keith Haring, but many people got to know the other side of his work during the AIDS crisis. Long before he died of AIDS in 1990, he was world-famous and one of the most well-known gay artists. And not just in the United States. His first exhibition in Europe took place in Rotterdam, as early as 1982. This city now hosts the exhibition “Keith Haring: the Political Line!”

And while Amsterdam is preparing for the 2015 award, people are looking back on the successful first edition of Pride Photo Nijmegen.

This summer, the Dutch-Russian team Walking Together will participate in the Annual Four Day Walking Event in Nijmegen. Walking Together consists of GLBT activists from Nijmegen and various cities in the Russian Federation. During the summer festivities, the local Pink House will show works by Russian artists.

At the moment, our focus is on the developments in the Russian Federation. But Putin’s homophobia does not only have to do with the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church. Stalin’s legacy plays an equally important part. Just as Hitler put a stop to the comparatively tolerant attitude towards homosexuality in the Weimar Republic, Stalin put a stop to the last remnants of freedom after the October revolution of 1917.
