The life and art of Peter Hujar (1934–1987) were rooted in downtown New York. Private by nature, combative in manner, well-read, and widely connected, Hujar inhabited a world of avant-garde dance, music, art, and drag performance. His mature career paralleled the public unfolding of gay life between the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
Last year saw the thirtieth anniversary of the Homomonument, signifying that for three decades now, the call “Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen” (Such an endless desire for friendship) can be heard from the old centre of Amsterdam. In 1979, when the plans for the monument were just in the early stage, this line of poetry by Jacob Israël de Haan had already been used as the title of an anthology of Dutch homoerotic poetry.

On Friday, February 2, Ali Erol, a prominent Turkish human rights activist and a founder of Kaos GL Association, Turkey’s first registered GLBT organization, was arrested and detained in a home he shares with his partner. Clear indications of the purpose of his arrest are yet unknown, though Kaos GL has reported that Erol’s social media posts were included in the authorities’ detention warrant.
Again, for eleven days in a row, cinema Het Ketelhuis on the Westergasterrein will serve as Holland’s GLBTQ hotspot from March 8 until March 18. The twenty-first edition of Amsterdam’s queer film festival has an impressive number of 140 screenings with the most beautiful and interesting gay cinema on offer.
