Number of HIV Diagnoses in Amsterdam Halved

The number of HIV diagnoses in the city of Amsterdam has halved over a 5-year period. The city has been very successful in the implementation of the UN targets in the fight against new HIV infections. This was made evident in a report presented by UNAIDS in July on the eve of the International Aids Conference in Paris.

Gert Hekma’s Formal Leave of the University of Amsterdam

Since 1984, Gert Hekma was the figurehead of Gay and Lesbian Studies at the University of Amsterdam. This year, however, sees his retirement. Gert Hekma has now officially left the sociology and anthropology department of the University of Amsterdam. With giving the annual Mosse Lecture on the 20th of September he will say his official goodbyes to Gay and Lesbian Studies, which was set up in 1984.

Festive Commemoration of Singer and Comedian Wim Sonneveld

On June 28, it was one hundred years ago that the comedian, singer and actor Wim Sonneveld (1917-1974) was born. To celebrate this happy fact, the Amsterdam bridge 175 on the Marnixstraat that spans the Leidsegracht was officially renamed the Wim Sonneveld Bridge on that very same day. The nameplate was unveiled by, among others, comedian André van Duin.
