The whole story made it to just a small article in most Belgium newspapers last year, the story of 15-year-old Alexandre Robert. Last July, this young man with two nationalities (French and Swiss) visited his father, who works in the hotel business in Dubai. During this holiday he made an appointment for the late afternoon in a commercial center with a friend, Fabrice, who’s one year older.
The largest electronics fair of the world was held in Las Vegas in January. What are the trends of CES 2008, what’s new and what will disappear?
One general conclusion is that there were no big revolutionary announcements. It’s more a matter of evolution at the moment, and of refining of existing technologies and products. The Consumer Electronics Show is still also mainly about consumer electronics, although IT is getting more and more present.
The Stablemaster on the Warmoesstraat 23 lost its alcohol license as from the 1st of January. The City Centre told Tony Starr, who ran the bar, that his establishment was not suitable for sex parties. The Stablemaster has been famous for its gay ‘jack off parties’ and safe sex parties for years. The last one of these has come and gone already, it was a busy one according to the owner. The café also had a little hotel with eight rooms. The Stablemaster worked with a closed door.
To The Point - True stories from Pink Point, the gay and lesbian info kiosk at the Homomonument. See http://www.pinkpoint.org
People often ask me if the things that I write about in this column all actually happened to me at Pink Point. Well, I can only say yes to that. It might sometimes seem strange, but everything I write about has really happened. Recently, I’d been open for just five minutes, a little after 10am, when a completely drunken man from India popped up in front of my counter.
If you want to travel far for little money, go for the dollar. New York is getting cheaper and cheaper to shop in but also a holiday in the Caribbean will set you back less than ever. It’s already quite normal to hop over to New York for a shopping weekend. The weakening dollar makes holidaying in the States very attractive. A trip to Aruba, Barbados, Mexico or Venezuela has also become very affordable. Most of these states have linked their currency to the dollar. The Antillean guilder has dipped with the dollar in spite of its Dutch name.
Homosexuality is still a big taboo in sports, let alone at the top. COC Netherlands and the John Blankenstein Foundation will present a book written by Huub ter Haar next autumn containing interviews with retired as well as still active top sports people that are gay. The aim is to make homosexuality in the sports world more visible and something one can talk about because it’s clear that that could improve acceptance and integration in society as a whole.
Queen was against Diana’s support for aids patients
The British Queen Elizabeth is said to have been against Diana’s support for aids patients.
“Can’t you pick something happier?” she would have said to her daughter in law at the time. Former bodyguard to the princess Ken Wharfe said this in a statement in London High Court during the investigation of Diana’s death. Princess Di, who died in the summer of 1997 in a car crash in Paris, moved the world when she hugged and embraced aids patients in front of the cameras. At the time many people still thought the virus could be picked up just by touching someone.
A planned workshop on homosexuality was taken off the program of Christival, a large evangelical youth festival in Germany in May. The Green’s member of parliament Volker Beck discovered the workshop with the title ‘Understanding Homosexuality - chances to change’ in the program of Christival. He asked the Christian Democrat minister of family matters, Ursula von der Leyen, who’s also the festival’s patron for an explanation.
With 2007 safely behind us, Gay News columnist Chris Andreas takes a good hard look at the new and the old, the best and the worst of Gay Amsterdam this past year.
2007 started off promisingly with the opening of two new gay bars; De Engel van Amsterdam on the Zeedijk, which has helped to transform this part of the red light district into a brand new mini-gay zone, with punters pouring out onto the street on sunny afternoons; and the ’t Leeuwtje, a tiny new bar on the Reguliersdwarsstraat that nobody seems to have heard about (ever heard of publicity boys?).
Diesel likes to break with conventions and decided to introduce their life elixir Fuel for Life in a “Pocket Jewel” edition. Fuel for Life is the fragrance Diesel introduced last fall. A mysterious elixir that smells very sexy and energetic. Very masculine with a hint of aniseed and dry wood. Now this fluid is also available hidden inside a piece of jewelry.
Excluding gays and women from political functions is not in accordance with European laws. This was the answer of the European Commission to questions of D66 member of European Parliament Sophie in ’t Veld about the row on the position of women in the Dutch Calvinist Party (SGP) and gays in the Christian Union Party (ChristenUnie). The European Commissioner for Social Affairs, Vladimir Spidla, says it’s illegal to discriminate on sex or sexual orientation when it comes to work, education or work conditions.
