Shortly before the turn of the year, the Dutch magazine for the young gays Expreszo was saved from ruin once more. Expreszo’s courting disaster has two main reasons. Its editors suffer from the ineradicable misconception a gay magazine should cater to a "mixed" crowd, where gays, deplorably or not, in general don’t give a hoot what concerns lesbians, and vice versa.
In fashion there are no taboos any longer. But one piece of clothing hasn’t met with general acceptance yet: the men’s skirt. In dress men and women often swap territories, but are men actually jumping up and down to put on a skirt?
At the Rotterdam Film Festival Hedwig And The Angry Inch premiered. This dramatic musical comedy is an adaptation of the Off-Broadway production of the same name in which director ánd lead player John Cameron Mitchell trod the boards for two years and for which he won an Obie Award.
The movieThe Diaries of Vaslav Nijinsky by the Dutchman, working and living in Australia, Paul Cox, is not easy to catch in words. “It’s not a documentary and also not a feature film”, says Cox, “it simply is just a film”. Cox tries to capture the intensity and the feelings of Nijinsky’s diaries in screen images. For his guide he takes a number of expressions of the legendary androgynous dancer from the early XXth century.
The colder the country, the more we like to prance around in the nude. At least, that’s what the Russians seem to think. On 26th November 2001 Pim Fortuyn became leader of Leefbaar Nederland, the new political non-party, with a stunning 90% percent of the vote. Stridently anti-immigrant, Fortuyn has been compared to neo-fascists Jörg Haider of Austria and Filip de Winter from the Vlaams Blok.
