The Turbulent Life of Olympic Champion Matthew Mitcham

Last December, president Obama announced that the American delegation to the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will consist of, among others, the tennis player Billie Jean King, and ice hockey player Caitlin Cahow, both openly lesbian, and also of figure skater Brian Boitano, who won Olympic Gold in 1988. Shortly after Obama’s announcement, Boitano told the Associated Press he is gay. He admitted that he never wanted to give out such a statement, as he wanted his private life to remain private, and that his homosexuality is only part of his identity.

Decision on Gay Relationship and Ordainment Delayed

The Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlands Gereformeerde Kerken, NGK) will not take a decision in the immediate future on whether or not parishioners with a homosexual relationship can become a deacon. The committee that has to answer this question will only conclude its final report in the spring of 2015. The committee will publish an interim report with interviews with homosexual and lesbian parishioners and representatives of Christian LGBT organisations.

Dear Neighbors to the North, Just as I am writing this column it was announced that the Dutch King, Queen and Prime Minister will go to the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in support of the Dutch athletes. A commendable reason. Quite a large number of world leaders have announced not to travel to Sochi: the American president Barack Obama, the German president Gauck, and the French president Hollande. Every day, another famous person is added to this list.

Tijgertje Organizes Its Tenth Badminton Tournament

During the Easter weekend, Tijgertje organizes the Tenth Gay & Lesbian International Easter Badminton Tournament Amsterdam. Foundation Tijgertje started in 1982 with self-defense classes after gays and lesbians were beaten up by gay-bashers during the Pink Saturday in Amersfoort. By now, Tijgertje has developed into an extremely versatile sporting club with a wide range of sports, including badminton.
