No Gay Games in Amsterdam in 2018

The Gay Games 2018 will not be held in Amsterdam, as the city did not qualify for the final round to organise the games. Both Orlando and Amsterdam did not make it. London, Paris and Limerick, however, are still in the running.

First Gay Marriage on Bonaire

The first same-sex marriage on Bonaire took place. According to the Caribbean Network, the Aruban Jean Ardley Baiz (43) entered into matrimony with the Venezuelan Norbert Miguel Torrealba (30).

‘Stranger by the Lake’ wins Queer Palm at Cannes

During the Cannes film festival the independent Queer Palm was also presented. The Queer Palm celebrates a movie from one of the various categories in the festival. A film that addresses homosexual issues in an exceptional manner. The jury consists of film professionals, journalists, and film festival organizers. The award was presented to the makers of “Stranger by the Lake” during a festive.

Opening QueeRussia – Approved by Russia

On Sunday May 19, the exhibition QueeRussia – The hidden (p)art was opened by Kees van Twist, former president of the Groninger Museum, and Koen van Dijk, president of COC Netherlands. The exhibition in Galerie MooiMan in Groningen is part of the Holland-Russia year 2013 and North-Holland-Russia 2013 programme, and has been officially approved by the Russian authorities.

Fashion: Vilebrequin and Gant

The French swim wear label Vilebrequin comes from sunny Saint-Tropez. The label came into existence in 1971, at a time this seaside resort was still entertainment for the “happy few.” Outside on the pavement of Café Sénéquier, sketches are made that are inspired on surf wear. Totally different from what was acceptable swim wear in those days.

Teylers Museum Shows Unknown Early Drawings by Andy Warhol

Dutch author Joost Zwagerman delivered a talk on Andy Warhol’s life and work at the opening of the exhibition “Andy Warhol: Unknown Early Drawings” at Teylers Museum. The opening was also attended by German gallery owner Daniel Blau, who discovered these drawings in the archives of the Andy Warhol Foundation in New York. The Exhibition is on display till September 1.

Boy Scouts of America to Admit Young Gays

In the near future, homosexual boys can finally become a member of the American Scouts. A majority of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America decided to lift the ban on gay youth. The ban will still be in place for men over 18 years of age. The lift of the ban will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

The Public Opinion on Homosexuality in The Netherlands and Europe

Since 1981, the acceptance of homosexuality in European countries has increased. The last few years, however, this increase has leveled off. In Scandinavian counties and Western European countries, such as The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France, the majority of the population has no problem with homosexuality, while in Eastern European countries, such as Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Baltic countries and Russia, the majority of the population still disapproves.
