From the 17th till the 21st of January 2013 the fourth edition of Leather Pride Belgium will take place in Antwerp. For the first time a so-called “main event” will be added to the program, called Darklands. Last year some three thousand fetish lovers found their way to the city at the River Schelde for an unforgettable party of leather, love and fun; the organizers are trying to top that this year with an extended program.
Minister Edith Schippers persists in barring ‘men that have sex with other men’ (MSM) from donating blood. The Minister of Health made this clear when addressing parliament’s wish to let MSM donate blood. She also says that she’s asked blood bank Sanquin to advise her on the wish to be a donor and the perception of risk factors within the group of MSM. COC says the minister’s proposed follow-up is strange and maintains the stand that MSM should be accepted as blood donors.
The HIV-Monitor Foundation (SHM) records in her Monitoring Report 2012 that the annual number of new HIV-cases stays high. Over 2011 there were 1076 newly registered infections. This number is stable and at the same level as over 2009 and 2010. The number of new infections over these years averaged on 1100 per year. Amongst men that have sex with other men (MSM) there were 714 new infections in 2011, which is also like the previous years. MSM is still the group that runs most of the risk to get HIV in The Netherlands.
In Austria the men drop everything. The nude male is on display! Often full frontal. Stained, vulnerable, weak. Desirable. But also full of desire. From Antiquity to the present time artists have depicted undressed men. But often these nude bodies ended up in museum vaults or private collections.
If I remember correctly no Dutch gay magazine has ever had a “regular” leather columnist. I can’t think of any other European magazine that had one either. In the United States the offer of regional magazines is so huge that it’s not easy to have an overview, but perhaps Steve Lenius is right when he claims that the column “Leather Life” he writes for the bi-weekly Minneapolis magazine “Lavender” is rather unusual because it doesn’t appear “in a strictly leather-oriented publication, but rather in a general-interest GLBT publication.”
The telephone rang. It was Timo from Amersfoort. He was twenty-two at the time, I twenty-eight. “I miss my family so much,” he cried. “Come on,” I said, “I will cheer you up. Jump on a train and come to Amsterdam. We’ll do something fun together.” Timo’s father had come from Italy to The Netherlands in 1962 as a factory worker. He ended up in an expensive boarding house in Amersfoort. A few years later his family came over as well.
Loitering With Intent After Closing Time. As soon as I entered the busy watering hole, this bartender caught my eye. I was rooted to the spot, utterly mesmerized by this sexy creature. Eventually I got a hold on myself, ordered a drink and begin to chat with the customers at the bar. But I did not, for long, stop watching him out of the corner of my eye. Once or twice I got the feeling that he saw I was looking at him and was not puzzled as to why.
The Spanish bishops call on catholic politicians of all parties to abolish the legislation making it possible for same-sex couples to get married. This legislation is destroying marriage says bishop Juan Antonio Martinez Camino in the name of the Spanish Bishop Conference.
Not too many European cities have such a rich gay history as the Austrian capital. Gay emperors, generals or composers of days gone by and all the gays and lesbians of today convert Vienna into a unique travel destination.
