‘You Can Continue Sucking Me Off Now’

I live in a senior unit of a “fifty-five and over” apartment complex. The complex consists of two blocks: one four stories high and the other six stories. They’re connected with an arcade. At the main entrance there’s the reception. In the arcade there’s a hair salon, a shop, a laundromat, an Internet café and an activity room with a bar.

Barrington, one of the pioneers of physique photography was there to witness them make it that far, while he never did. After visiting an exhibition of Mapplethorpe’s work in the ICA in London he wrote in his diary: “Excellent – but I’m so much better – frustration.”

The Difficult Freedom, or: Hiding in Times of Peace

It seemed an interesting initiative: four people (philosopher Dirk van Weelden, political scientist Jean Tillie, radio program producer Jeroen van Kan and author Maartje Wortel) stay in the “hidden level” of the house at 401 Herengracht for a few days leading up to Memorial Day and Liberation Day as part of “The paradox of freedom” of the new generation of Castrum Peregrini. They would share their experiences in the VPRO radio show “De Avonden” (directed by Jeroen van Kan); that was the idea.

Political Pride

Dear Northern Neighbors, the day before Gay News went to the printer, we had Gay Pride in Brussels. No less than 50,000 participants had come to our capital, quite a few more than last year. Traditionally the weather was dodgy: no rain but especially when the sun had gone the temperature painfully dropped to the level of a fresh winter evening. It wasn’t very pleasant so that might explain why the streets emptied out so quickly afterwards.

Hellfire in Church, Diabolical Shenanigans

While I push my way through warm bodies, I spot a glowing set of demon’s eyes above the stage, flames and burning angel’s wings are projected in his gaping mouth. At the edge of the dance floor there’s Bram, his square shaved head nods slightly to the hammering beats of the music. When he sees me he grins, his eyes smoldering in the dark. He hooks his arm around my neck and calls into my ear: “You arrived at a special moment, I wonder whether Robbie will have the nerve tonight.”
