Thirty-Five Years Of Ferry Maat’s Soulshow

Ferry Maat: almost everyone knows his name in the Netherlands. Isn’t it because of the Dutch Top 40, than certainly from his legendary “Soulshow,” which in the 70s and 80s reached incredible listening ratings. People stayed home on Thursday evenings for this show and DJs were inspired by Ferry’s music choice in their gigs the following weekend. And one can still listen to the “Soulshow”: every Saturday between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Radio Veronica.

It’s a cold Sunday morning. I’ve just put all the postcard racks outside and it feels like my fingers will freeze off at any moment. Fortunately I can quickly warm up with the radiator, which is snuggled under my stool. It may be winter outside but my ass is warm, sweetie.

“It’s full steam ahead with social acceptance of homosexuality in Amsterdam...”

At the assembly of four front-running cities with Minister Plasterk (Emancipation) the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima was evidence of the largest symbolic move towards the beginning of the third phase of gay emancipation: social acceptance of homosexuality. After taking it out of criminal jurisdiction and eradicating discrimination in legislation - introducing gay marriage being the most recent and most symbolic move - it is now time to work on total social acceptance.
