Peter Cincotti - East of Angel Town (Warner Music) ***

At the moment Peter Cincotti (born 1983 in New York City) isn’t very well-known in our country, but that will probably change soon because of his album “East of Angel Town.” It is already the fourth album of this 24-year-old musical virtuoso. The first time I had something to do with Peter Cincotti was a few years ago in a small pub in Amsterdam. Towards closing time they always played markedly good jazz music and upon inquiry it appeared to be by one Peter Cincotti.

Letter from Brussels - HIV Testing - The New Norm?

Dear Northern Neighbors, This week I saw some fragments from the well-known Dutch television show “Boer zoekt vrouw” (Farmer Looking For A Wife), which is probably not unfamiliar to you, unless you’re living on a completely different celestial body. We in Flanders also know this program, in which anchor woman Dina Tersago as a real hoyden with unbelievable enthusiasm tries to get a farmer off the streets, not an easy task to be sure.

Fashion - Style 2008 - Milaan

Fashion, luxury and men... they seem to get closer and closer together. It’s a fact that men’s fashion has grown explosively in size over the past couple of years. “The male consumer has so much to choose from nowadays that he’s willing to pay much more for quality. He prefers large Italians labels,” states Raffaello Napoleone (head of the Pitti Uomo men’s fair in Florence).

Gold: Amsterdam

A proposed ban on munching magic mushrooms might stop Amsterdam's psychedelic swirl of rainbows, but aside from some pointed press about conservatives' narrowing policies toward immigration and religion (i.e., Muslims), the Netherlands still maintains an inclusive love affair with all flavors of minorities, sexual or otherwise. Meanwhile, a new Museum of Bags and Purses -- the world's first -- ups the city's already fashionable and cutting-edge ante.

Sourpuss

“You’re a horrid person.” With this sentence the woman in the hospital finished. During my job as a male nurse, once again I hadn’t complied with the “urgent” request for a tranquilizer from a patient. I do know that, for certain people, I’m not a pleasant person indeed, but to consider myself as horrid is a little bit too extreme in my opinion.

D66 wants to adapt non-discrimination legislation

D66 (Democrats) wants to adapt the non-discrimination legislation to sharpen the ban on discrimination of gays. At this moment discrimination of gays is possible under certain circumstances. Member of parliament Boris van der Ham presents a proposal to ban this loophole. Under the current legislation it is possible to discriminate gays in the education system. Although discrimination on the basis of homosexuality itself is illegal, specific circumstances make it possible for religious schools to refuse gays from teaching positions. Van der Ham: “This means that personnel in these schools are allowed to be gay as long as they keep this fact a secret, which is of course ridiculous; a very twisted construction.”

Parliament wants measures against refusal of gays

The parliament has asked the Dutch government to take measures so that gays can’t be refused at or sent away from schools or institutes with a religious background. PvdA (Social Democrats), SP (Socialists), VVD (Liberals), GroenLinks (Greens) and D66 (Democrats) have responded to the threat of the European Commission to take The Netherlands to the Judicial Court of Luxembourg if it refuses to sharpen the non-discrimination legislation. GroenLinks member Dibi asked for an explanation from the responsible ministers Plasterk (Education, Culture and Science) and Ter Horst (Internal Affairs) on the request of the Commission.
