Letter from Brussels - Hypocrisy

Dear Northern Neighbors,

The whole story made it to just a small article in most Belgium newspapers last year, the story of 15-year-old Alexandre Robert. Last July, this young man with two nationalities (French and Swiss) visited his father, who works in the hotel business in Dubai. During this holiday he made an appointment for the late afternoon in a commercial center with a friend, Fabrice, who’s one year older.

CES 2008

The largest electronics fair of the world was held in Las Vegas in January. What are the trends of CES 2008, what’s new and what will disappear?

One general conclusion is that there were no big revolutionary announcements. It’s more a matter of evolution at the moment, and of refining of existing technologies and products. The Consumer Electronics Show is still also mainly about consumer electronics, although IT is getting more and more present.

Pink Point - Just My Day

To The Point - True stories from Pink Point, the gay and lesbian info kiosk at the Homomonument. See http://www.pinkpoint.org

People often ask me if the things that I write about in this column all actually happened to me at Pink Point. Well, I can only say yes to that. It might sometimes seem strange, but everything I write about has really happened. Recently, I’d been open for just five minutes, a little after 10am, when a completely drunken man from India popped up in front of my counter.

2008 The year of the dollar holiday

If you want to travel far for little money, go for the dollar. New York is getting cheaper and cheaper to shop in but also a holiday in the Caribbean will set you back less than ever. It’s already quite normal to hop over to New York for a shopping weekend. The weakening dollar makes holidaying in the States very attractive. A trip to Aruba, Barbados, Mexico or Venezuela has also become very affordable. Most of these states have linked their currency to the dollar. The Antillean guilder has dipped with the dollar in spite of its Dutch name.

Top sportsmen come out of the closet

Homosexuality is still a big taboo in sports, let alone at the top. COC Netherlands and the John Blankenstein Foundation will present a book written by Huub ter Haar next autumn containing interviews with retired as well as still active top sports people that are gay. The aim is to make homosexuality in the sports world more visible and something one can talk about because it’s clear that that could improve acceptance and integration in society as a whole.

Queen was against Diana’s support for aids patients

The British Queen Elizabeth is said to have been against Diana’s support for aids patients. “Can’t you pick something happier?” she would have said to her daughter in law at the time. Former bodyguard to the princess Ken Wharfe said this in a statement in London High Court during the investigation of Diana’s death. Princess Di, who died in the summer of 1997 in a car crash in Paris, moved the world when she hugged and embraced aids patients in front of the cameras. At the time many people still thought the virus could be picked up just by touching someone.

Bye Bye 2007

With 2007 safely behind us, Gay News columnist Chris Andreas takes a good hard look at the new and the old, the best and the worst of Gay Amsterdam this past year. 2007 started off promisingly with the opening of two new gay bars; De Engel van Amsterdam on the Zeedijk, which has helped to transform this part of the red light district into a brand new mini-gay zone, with punters pouring out onto the street on sunny afternoons; and the ’t Leeuwtje, a tiny new bar on the Reguliersdwarsstraat that nobody seems to have heard about (ever heard of publicity boys?).
