Last year the book Het verloren Paradijs (The Lost Paradise) was published, with the subtitle Op zoek naar het andere Cuba (In Search of the other Cuba). Author Dirk Koppes reports about life on Cuba after interviewing twenty youngsters. Although the book hasn’t been translated in English (yet), it is interesting enough to lift out some cases, because Cuba is becoming a very popular gay holiday destination nowadays.
When you are talking about show muscles, the biceps seem to be on top of the list. The biceps are those muscles you’ll show easily when somebody else is asking you to show your muscles. For many outsiders big biceps are more impressive than big legs. No wonder a lot of people who fitness and a lot of bodybuilders love to train (and over-train) their biceps.
Starting June 24, Dutch film distributor Cinemien presents a number of five gay movies and will lump them together as Gay Summer Tour. Five gay movies will be shown in every big city of the country (varying from comedy, drama until renewing arthouse), showing another movie in every city on a weekly base during five weeks. Next to that the movie titles will tour in different programmes through different cities.
A couple of years ago this film was already reviewed when it had its premiere. Now it has been released on DVD.
The film is based on the life of writer/poet Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990), born on Cuba. He was an advocate of the Cuban revolution, but very soon he found out that he wasn’t able to write everything he wanted with Castro in charge.
2004 will be one of those rather scarce years in which three major sporting events rouse the emotions: the Soccer European Championship, the Tour de France and the Olympic Games. Even within Gay News's ranks some men are getting all excited about the prospect of watching so many athletic men.
The train from Paris hardly had any minute delay. While opening the door Joris's eyes were glancing over the platform: the few travellers who had chosen to get off here could hardly conceal his sight of Zovsky. But there wasn’t a silhouette of the artist to be seen.
Had the weather in Paris been extremely soft and rainy for the time of year, here the spicy and cold, almost stinging air that was coming to meet him, didn’t leave any doubt: he was arriving in a southern and dry area.
Only a few more weeks, respectively a couple of days, depending on when you’re reading this, and "Our Boys" will be playing their first football match in Portugal. This is a good reason to try out De Portugees at the Zeedijk this month.
The Zeedijk is one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam. It’s full of life: cosy living, nice shopping and a variation of options for your night-out. At the Zeedijk a culinary journey around the world is one of the possibilities.
The last month was a busy one at the Homomonument. Not only were there two huge parties (the annual Roze Wester Festival on Queen's Day and Liberation Day) and a Remembrance Ceremony at the monument, but also a spontaneous demonstration on April 24th. The demonstation was a protest against the book "The Way of the Moslim" published in 1964 and found recently in the El-Tawheed Mosque in Amsterdam West, in which a passage called on Moslims to "throw homosexuals head down from the highest building and then stone them." Following are quotes from five of the main speakers on that day
In March, the two men responsible for the brutal slayings at Sizzlers, a gay massage parlour in Capetown, on January 19 last year, where each sentenced to nine life terms in prison. They were found guilty on nine charges of murder and one of attempted murder.
Former waiter Adam Woest, 27, and taxi driver Trevor Theys, 43, both admitted that they were involved in the gruesome deed, but they blamed each other for the killings.
On April 25 the poet Thom Gunn died at his home in San Francisco, his adopted hometown.
Thomson William Gunn was born on August 29 1929 in Gravesend, Kent, England and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He wrote his first poem for a student magazine, and its success prompted him to adopt that medium to express himself.
Between June 4th and 13th Europride, the pan-European version of the Pride celebration will be held in the German town Hamburg under the motto "Love Breaks Barriers".
After a week filled with activities, the event will come to a climax during the weekend of June 11th to 13th. On June 12th a Street Party will be held on Jungfernstieg, Hamburg's finest boulevard.
In our April issue we reported about the strange refusal of the Amsterdam Tourist Board to distribute the free Gay Map Amsterdam, because they prefer to sell their own map, although this hardly contains any gay information. Our article prompted Leather Pride Nederland (LPN), a joint venture of Black Body, Rob, and Mister B., to call the Amsterdam Tourist Board to account in a letter dated April 29.
