Young boys that have just come out of the closet as gay or bisexual often have unsafe sex. Information campaigns on hiv and condom use should be especially targeted to this group at risk. This is what psychologist Dirk Franssens advises. Over the past years he has conducted an internet based research on sexual behavior of young gay and bisexual boys who have experienced their coming-out less than a year ago.

Over half of the gay and bisexual men under the age of 25 frequent at least one gay site a day; 45% find their first sex partner online and don’t use a condom with their first anal contact. Previous research suggested that gays and bisexuals who meet through internet often don’t use condoms but this recent one shows there’s no significant difference. 43% of those with a steady partner use no condom.

Over one-third of the young gays with several steady sex partners and gays and bisexual with casual contacts have unprotected sex. In general almost 40% of the gays between 16 and 25 years of age have unprotected sex, and run the risk of contracting hiv as well as passing it on.

The boys taking part in Franssens survey, linked to the University of Maastricht, have filled out forms every half-year for three years in a row. The group consisted mainly of Caucasian Dutch boys of around 19-years old, many of whom still living with their parents. Most of them discovered around their 13th or 14th year that they were gay.

Almost 20% considers themselves bisexual. Their first sexual contact with another man is often spontaneous. Franssens conducted his research ‘Sexual risk behavior and mental health of young gay men’, on the base of which he hopes to graduate this month, in cooperation with the University of Maastricht and the Aids Fonds.
