Gay-Pride 2010 not just in the Centre of Amsterdam

|
| | | | by Editorial Staff, in Events & Agenda , posted 05 February 2010 | During the budget discussions for 2010 the Amsterdam-Centre council adopted a proposal of GroenLinks (Greens) and PvdA (Social Democrats) to ask the local board to start cooperation with the organizers of Gay Pride 2010 to find ways to increase the social impact of Gay Pride and its events on other areas than jus the city centre.
GroenLinks hopes to achieve that the extravagant boat parade will not just be an event for the inner city of the capital exclusively. Especially since the position of gays in the city centre is relatively ok, while in other parts of the city there’s plenty of room for improvement. GroenLinks spokesperson Jorrit Nuijens says it’s very important to increase the visibility of the event through the entire city.
Nuijens: “Visibility is extremely important for emancipation, but there are so many gays living in the centre and even more of them go out here, that it seems we’re preaching to the converted. This is a missed opportunity because the Canal Pride Parade is a fabulous event, unique in the world and very good for the local economy; it could have a much larger social impact. I think Gay Pride should be more than a party for the in-crowd.
In their press release the Gay Pride 2009 organization claims Amsterdam ‘should be proud of this event’.
|
Nuijens: ‘But Amsterdam is larger than just the area within the ring of canals, right? It would be great if the organization extended the visibility of this event to other parts of the city. I was very proud to dance and jump around with Femke Halsema on the GroenLinks boat last year.
Because they didn’t have enough time the organizer couldn’t answer to the offer of Marcouch to have the parade start in Slotervaart, but I really hope they will take the leap in 2010. And if it’s up to me I’ll join the gay pride in Staphorst in 2011, casually dressed of course.’
