Free condoms and lube in gay sauna and gay bars.

From the first of December 2009 the Aids Fonds is distributing free condoms and lube for all visitors of gay saunas, bars and parties.
So from now on it’s even easier to keep the sex safe in these venues. They’re starting in five venues in Amsterdam to begin with, but from 2010 the rest of Holland will follow.
The idea is to provide all gay nightlife spots in Holland with free condoms. The venue managers are responsible for the transport costs and they have to keep track of when stock is getting low.
Take away barriers
A condom is the best way to prevent contracting hiv but one-third of the gay men doesn’t always succeed in using them. There are moments people forget about condoms: people forget to take them with them from home, or they change plans halfway the evening and decide to go out. For these and other similar situations it’s good to have free condoms distributed.
Many countries offer free condoms in places where gay or bisexual men meet, Holland until now had them only here and there. Distributing free condoms will take down barriers. The Aids Fonds assumes that this will stimulate the use of condoms amongst men that have sex with other men.
Condoms with lube
The condoms are accompanied with sachets of lube. Without lube the chance of condoms to rip is eight times higher. Some condoms are already lubricated somewhat, but this is never enough for anal sex. So it’s very important to also distribute lube.

Information on safe sex
All bars, saunas, cinemas and parties aimed at gay and bisexual men can take part in the program. They will have to sign a contract in which they promise to distribute these condoms, lube as well as prevention information material to their customers.
For all sex on premises venues there’s an extra requirement that they join the ‘Safer Sex Venues’ project of Schorer, which means they have to take care of good information and hygienic circumstances. Personnel will also get an annual training session on safer sex practices.
