Many darkrooms in Amsterdam are dirty

Many darkrooms in Amsterdam are dirty. A new GGD (Public Health Bureau) inspection showed that hygiene is seriously slipping. They visited nine locations where gay men have sex. The construction and design of the places are often of no help to keep thing clean. At six locations this was the case. Seven locations had poor ventilation.

The rooms could be kept a lot cleaner.

Six of the locations were visibly dirty; seven locations had no cleaning schedule. Seven locations were definitely not clean enough, let alone disinfected. The GGD found that five places had insufficient facilities to wash hands. In some aspects the darkrooms did ok: they usually had garbage bins...

The city council asked for the inspection in order to find out whether supervision in hygiene will also have effect on the STD infection rates. The GGD now reports that even though most darkrooms are downright filthy, it has no negative effect on STD infection rates. ‘The type of sex people choose to have’ is of much more importance in this matter. Amsterdam has eighteen known darkrooms in clubs, bars, sauna’s and sex cinema’s

Possible new standard for cleaner darkrooms

In the future clean darkrooms might get a municipal seal of quality. City Supervisor Marijke Vos was asked by the representatives to investigate the possibilities. Although the GGD report showed the hygiene in darkrooms was poor Vos resisted the call for licensing because she claimed that would not achieve the objective, which is to decrease the spread and presence of STDs in the community. She said it was up to the visitors of darkrooms to decide whether a place was clean enough.

A majority of the city council thought however, that the authorities couldn’t leave it completely to just the darkroom owners and their public. Marijke Vos is now going to have a meeting with darkroom owners, after which she’ll come with a proposal. A while ago the city council set out to create a general code of practice, together with Schorer and the darkroom owners, but the government pulled out at a later stage.

I fide this true some dark rooms are really disgusting. I think the worse darkroom in Amsterdam is the Cuckoosnest. The place is damp, dirty and smells. I feel that the owner of the Cuckoosnest should invest a little money after all the are making a lot off of us and clean the place up. Only good thing about the nest is that it is well lit, you can see who us sucking you...lol

Dirty Dicks is a dirty dick. place should be cleaned up a little. The owner of the Eagle and Dirty Dick really need to loosen the purse, come on man you are making money with all the people coming in. GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY!!!!

In the past I always noted that the Cuckoos Nest seemed clean (at the start of the night) and this does seem to have slipped a bit over the last year. That said, I like the low light etc and dont want the darkrooms turned into clinical places, There are alternatives (e.g. Saunas) for those who like a different vibe. Lets make them cleaner, but not change the style.
