Hundreds of gays have been assaulted and murdered in Iraq. Many of these assaults and killings are executed by the national security forces, says the human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) in a new report that was published today.

From conversations with doctors could be distracted that hundreds of men have been killed over the past months. How many exactly is not possible to retrieve because homosexuality is still a completely taboo subject in Iraq. The human rights organizations claim the Iraqi authorities are not doing anything to prevent these crimes taking place.

Torturing and killing

The violence against gays by Shiite militia started a few years ago in Sadr City in Baghdad and has spread to many other Iraqi cities since.

“The Iraqi leaders are supposed to defend the rights of all Iraqis and shouldn’t rely on armed agents spreading hatred to take care of this,” says Scott Long, director of the holebi program of HRW. “To cover up torture and murders poses a threat to each and every Iraqi.”

Increasingly effeminate

One of the armed departments undertaking regular assaults on potential gays is the Muqtada al-Sadr Mahdi militia, mainly active in Sadr City itself.

They want to halt the process in which Iraqi men become increasingly effeminate. Scott Long has witness declarations that make clear that armed security forces are involved in the attacks.

Over fifty people confirmed to HRW they have been subject to abuse after they’d been stopped at checkpoints. These killings prove that the countries that have invaded Iraq after the war, still can’t offer the citizens protection.”
