In a recently published report the US-based Human Rights Watch said the Egyptian government is continuing to routinely arrest and torture men suspected of homosexual activities. The report In a Time of Torture: The Assault on Justice in Egypt's Crackdown on Homosexual Conduct documents the increasing repression suffered by Egyptians and foreign residents.

Human Rights Watch declares that the trial of 52 men arrested in a mass raid in 2001 was just the tip of the iceberg.
Detainees testified that they have been tortured: suspended in painful positions, burned with cigarettes, submerged in ice-cold water, subjected to electric shocks on their limbs and genitals, and routinely subjected to forced medical examination.

Many Egyptian intellectuals welcome the police activities. The columnist for the government daily "Al-Akhbar", Muhammed Abd Al-Mun'in Murad, wrote for example: "I do not know why this perversion has spread so conspiciously, either here in Egypt or globally. What is regrettable is that this distressing phenomenon is accompanied by campaigns defending the perverts' right to do as they wish with their bodies."

And also: "Egyptians see procuring between an active and a passive pervert [...] as one of the most loathsome acts of which anyone can be accused. People who have in the past found themselves imprisoned [in Egypt] were stunned by the depravity committed by the perverts, both secretly and openly."
