‘Art with Pride’ at Zandvoort

After last year’s great success of “Pride at the Beach,” Zandvoort takes it one step further. Besides a jolly parade, a large party on the town square, various festive activities by local entrepreneurs in the village and at the beach, the theme of the Zandvoorts Museum is also exclusively the Gay Pride.

The museum’s executives invited André Donker and René Zuiderveld to organize the exhibition “Art with Pride.”

The entire museum focuses on “gay art.” The two guest curators present paintings, photography, sculptures, jewellery, multidisciplinary art, as well as installations.

The organizers hope, through an extremely varied show, to ask the question whether “gay art” actually exist or whether it simply is art made by gay people or by artists with a certain “gay sensibility.” For instance, one element of the show is a small collection of four photographs made by four different photographers, in which visitors are presented with the question whether they can guess the maker’s sexual orientation. Is “gay art” truly recognizable?

Participating artists include Suzanne van de Laar (photography), Freek Weidema (sculptures), Maurice Heerdink (paintings), Peter Colstee (paintings), Marlène Sjerps (sculptures), Paul Derrez / Galerie Ra (jewellery), Ruben de Waal (videos), Chris Marmier (cartoons), Andrew Darkson (installation / photo art), René Zuiderveld (photography), Richard Hogenkamp (photography), Gabriel Batenburg (photography), and Christian Vincent (photography).
