Verpleegkundig Consulenten Hivsupport (V&VN) is supporting the Health Council's advice to the government to arrange the reimbursement of the HIV prevention pill PrEP. “We urge Minister Bruno Bruins to reimburse PrEP as soon as possible,” they write in an open letter to the Minister.
The HIV nurse, or in Dutch 'Verpleegkundig Consulent', is involved in the treatment of people running a high risk of contracting the HIV virus. They get PEP, which, in contrast to PrEP, can be compared to the morning-after pill; PrEP prevents contracting HIV, taking the medication before having sex. PEP must ensure that the HIV virus is removed from your system shortly after having unsafe sex.
The nurses indicate that they regularly see HIV infections in people who have received a PEP cure. It is precisely these people who belong to the high-risk group of contracting the virus. If PrEP is reimbursed and if it is more accessible to people who run a high risk of contracting HIV, many new HIV infections would be prevented. Currently PrEP is only available for people in this risk group and can pay for the treatment themselves.
With this letter, they join the appeal made by the Aidsfonds, Soa Aids Nederland, COC Nederland, the Dutch HIV Foundation, and the Dutch Association of HIV-treating physicians(NVHB): “Waiting even one more day for PrEP to be introduced is irresponsible; it means that new HIV infections could have been prevented but were not. We call on Health Minister Bruins to ensure that all those at risk of contracting HIV get access to PrEP - and in a quick and affordable way. Do not wait another day with the introduction of PrEP in the Netherlands. Stop the HIV epidemic now!”
