Out & About: Gender Kings and Gender Queens

Each month, Jurandy Lucas (creative producer of Backdoor Amsterdam) and Dave Koster (photographer) report on GLBTQ+ events in Amsterdam and elsewhere in the country. This month, they highlight the We Are the Future party, the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of The Queen’s Head, and the opening of Taboo Kantine.

We Are the Future Ball

Am I black or white, am I straight or gay? Top or bottom? Male or female? What category fits best? Grindr has a lot of boxes that - convenient or not - partly determine how your night will continue. But those who look more closely at sexuality and identity have already found their way to What Ish Gender, a fresh collective of stubborn individuals who believe that gender boundaries do not exist, and that the world is actually a playground. In cooperation with Amber Vineyard, mother of the House of Vineyard, they organized the We Are The Future Ball at the Compagnietheater Amsterdam on March 17.

An evening full of dance, art and a gender-neutral fashion show in a slightly competitive atmosphere. Actually, it was more of a cheerful and powerful plea against gender labelling and pigeon-holing. Participants walked the runway in categories such as Schoolboy Realness, Intergalactic Cunt and Luscious Body, to name a few.

The highlight of the evening was a voguing contest in which shoes, clothing and limbs quickly were thrown high up in the air. We had a great, hysterical evening. However, it was a shame the real voguing community was under-represented. The attendees had to be trained repeatedly in the practice of shouting, over-the-top encouraging, and being not-so-boring-as-your-parents. Perhaps something for the next edition?

Twentieth Anniversary of The Queen’s Head

Did you know The Queen’s Head on the Zeedijk is going strong for twenty years now? Which forty-something didn’t grown up there under the maternal care of drag diva Miss Dusty Gersanowitz. Yes, with that famous red wig! But you do not celebrate twenty years in one evening.

Over the next months, the Queen’s Head will organize a number of fun evenings, such as Drag Bingo, Kut Karaoke, Queens in Queens, and more. We were present at the kick-off on March 18th.

Dusty made us laugh with stories from the “gay world of that era,” and bingo princess Coby surprised everyone with her singing and dancing talent in a leopard mini-tutu. Anything goes in the Queen’s Head. The mixed public of young, old, male, female, gay, straight, and tourists all participated as part of the show.

The Queen’s Head is like a comfort blanket - full of music, dance and humor... lots of humor. Watch out for the big anniversary party on May 26th and do not miss it.

Opening Taboo Kantine

After months of renovations, they were finally ready for it. The doors of Taboo Kantine - the sister and neighbor of the famous Taboo Bar - finally opened on March 30. To celebrate this, the public was treated to a few free drinks from the nicest bar boys in Amsterdam. And since we do not object to free drinks, we also went! Bubbles and bar boys, we do like those.

The Taboo Kantine is a lot bigger than the Taboo Bar. The Canteen certainly is the bigger sister in the Taboo family. The interior is very beautiful with fresh colors and warm lights. We were told there is also a kitchen. You can order small “finger licking good” food. Or have them licked off, depending on your mood. Beyond that, the Taboo Kantine is a real asset to the Reguliersdwarsstraat. We congratulate Brendan and his team! Job well done!

Don’t Miss... Backdoor in the Melkweg

Oh Wow! We have news we can’t wait to tell you. Loyal visitors on Facebook already know this, but now we can finally inform you that on Saturday, June 9, 2018 we are back in the Amsterdam pop temple Melkweg!

After the success of our three-year anniversary party in January, we will be back with “Backdoor Presents Angels in Paradise.” Yes! For this summer edition we will be working with the famous Swiss party organizer Angels. Who doesn’t know their White Party or Black Party?

The main attraction is World Star DJ and producer Hector Fonseca from the United States behind the turntable. We have an over-the-top party planned with international DJs and sexy go-go boys. In short - a wonderful evening with more fun than you can handle! Ticket sales are in full swing and we expect it to be sold out quickly! Do not miss this Backdoor party.  Order your tickets here:
