Genderqueer in Amsterdam

by our Editors in Scene , 03 juli 2017

In the media, terms such as “transgender” and “gender identity” are increasingly used, while “genderqueer” and “gender fluid” are still relatively new concepts. It should be clear that the traditional male/female role models are slowly shifting, and that especially the younger generation is increasingly seeking new ways to express their own identity in less conventional ways.

Photo Remon van den KommerDespite the fact that there are some meeting places and activities for transgenders organized in the city, something seems to be missing when it comes to initiatives for this gender diverse target group.

This is the reason why John Sade of the Getto decided to do something about it. Starting in the month of July, the Getto will organize a monthly activity on the second Thursday of the month: “The Kiki,” where everyone is welcome, specifically transgenders, genderqueers, and all other gender diverse people. The aim is to be a meeting place with space for performances, art and culture, but first and foremost a cosy evening.

The intention is to create a platform that provides a wide range of activities. That is why they are promoting this in a collaboration with Club Church, the organizer of “Blue” every Thursday, and The Web, which has recently launched an event on the third Thursday of every month, “Kiss of the Spiderwoman.” They will advertise via the Queer gender agenda on Facebook. Meanwhile, other organizations such as Pink Terrorist have joined the platform to give Amsterdam a contemporary choice of events for a gender diverse audience.
