In the past, coming out as a gay man often meant considering: “But I wanted to be a father, and that’s going to be impossible.” In the Netherlands now, male couples or single gays have several options in order to realize their wish to become a father.

One possibility is co-parenting with a female couple or a single woman. Two students of the School of Journalism made a wonderful documentary about a gay couple searching for a single woman to start a family in a co-parenting construction.

Maarten and Elliott (both thirty) are in a relationship for a decade and had a great desire to have children. They made an appeal on the website of Meer dan Gewenst (de Dutch Gay Parenthood Foundation) trying to find someone to co-parent with and start a family. The thirty-eight-year-old Kim responded to this. They hit it off immediately. Kim by then had already registered for a speed date at Meer dan Gewenst. She went and concluded that Maarten and Elliott were the men she was looking for!

In the documentary “Gedeeld Door Drie” (Divided By Three) Evita Mac-nack and Maxime de Vries follow the trio from getting acquainted to the signing of the co-parenthood plan. In “Gedeeld Door Drie” Sara Coster explains how her own family came to be and the imperfect legal situation in the Netherlands. Sarah Coster is co-parenting with a gay couple, their children being ten and eleven.

The documentary will be screened on Thursday, June 29 at the Meer dan Gewenst Foundation in Amsterdam. Prior to the documentary, people can attend an information meeting in which “hands-on” experts tell their personal stories, and Nicoline Grijmans ( will explain the legal situation for gay couples or single gay people who are interested in co-parenting or a donor construction. People can register for the info meeting or the documentary, or both.
