Sauna Nieuwezijds, Amsterdam’s popular gay sauna near Central Station, closes for the month of May to fully renovate. Although open for less than four years, there are structural problems to the building that need to be addressed.
Elard Diekman, director of Nieuwezijds: “The building dates from the early 1980s and is in need of a complete update. The entire water and wastage pipe system throughout the building needs to be replaced, and unfortunately that includes right through our steam room and wet area, which have been leaking since we opened. So we have to completely demolish that area and start again.”
The building crew will be working around the clock to get the work finished as soon as possible, but will still need a full month to complete its work.
“We’re going to take the opportunity to also improve other parts of the sauna. We’ve learnt a lot since we opened and plan to make the space we have as efficient as possible. So we will put in an additional four full cabins, bringing the total number of cabin spaces to eighteen. As well we’ll move and enlarge our massage room. And the entrance to the jacuzzi was never optimal, so we will remodel that as well to make it easier to get into.”
The exact opening date in early June is not confirmed, so check their web and Facebook pages for updates. Meanwhile, NZ’s sister club, ChUrch, is open for business as usual, so expect ChUrch to be extra busy this month.
