EuroSongTravestival: Fifteen Years of Hilarity

It is nearly that time of the year again. Half of Europe is under the spell of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev, starting May 10th. Will the sweet Dutch O’G3NE girls be heard in the midst of all that blood-curdling screeching? Meanwhile, Song Contest loving Amsterdam is getting ready for its very own version of this battle. For the fifteenth consecutive year, the EuroSongTravestival will be held on May 7 in the Winston Kingdom.

This hilarious event showcases contestants from countries such as Travestibet, Norgay, Jurkije, Trammelant, and Fantasialand. Especially for the readers of Gay News, we present these unique photos of last year’s event, only hours before curtain call.

Koos van den Berg is the organizer of this counterpart of the Eurovision Song Contest. During the show, he will make the transformation to Coco Coquette and co-hosts with Mario Magic. “This year it promises to be a wonderful evening crammed with delightful Song Contest entries. True to tradition, we open the show with our very own version of ‘Un-Deux-Trois’ from 1976.” The organizer smiles and says: “I expect a lot from the Slutland entry. It cannot get more hilarious than that! But it is more than just a laugh. Some of the contestant even took singing lessons!”

A Motley Crew

The participants certainly are a motley crew, with younger candidates and veterans giving their all and very best. They will amaze the audience with a choice from over sixty years of Song Contest history and hysteria. A sneak preview: Miss Baksel, Saphira, Dolly Wood, Pia Vapeur, Kiki Boops, Marlene XL, Agnes Genova, Madame Maxime, and Dora Royale, among others. “They all sing live, and that is unique in drag shows, in which playback plays first fiddle. I don’t mind playback at all, but I do prefer the real thing. Out of tune is also fine. Another sneak preview? Saphira gives ‘Walk Along’ by Trijntje Oosterhuis another run for her money, and the Poppers bring a medley from German Song Contest successes from times long gone by. Last year, they won gloriously with their wonderful version of ‘Waterman’ by the Hearts of Soul from 1970.”

The audience, as tradition dictates, also has a say in who wins. Van den Berg: “Besides the professional jury with stars such as Molly Strychnine and Victoria False, the audience can also decide. There are three criteria: choice of song, the look, and the X factor. These earn points. Or, in simpler terms - ‘see,’ ‘hear, and ‘feel.’

The points are counted by hand to prevent Russian hackers to give their favourite a head-start and are added up.

At the end of the evening, the winner will be announced. During the excruciating point count, Lady Charity will entr’acte. Then the winning song will once again entice the Warmoesstraat. Everyone is welcome at this colorful and hilarious event. It is almost the same as the real thing, but certainly more fun!”

The EuroSongTravestival will take place on Sunday, May 7, from 19:00
onwards at the Winston Kingdom, Warmoesstraat 131.
Tickets 15.00 Euros. Presale at Gays&Gadgets, Spuistraat 44, Amsterdam.
