Lecture on Michelangelo’s Men

On Tuesday, October 4, 2016, Krzysztof Dobrowolski-Onclin, MA, will give a lecture on Michelangelo’s men at IHLIA, the international gay/lesbian library, archive, information and documentation center. Michelangelo was a painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and urbanist - a typical “homo universalis” of the Renaissance.

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) left an enormous amount of treasures that still amaze after half a millennium. Examples are the statue of David, the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, and the St. Peter’s Basilica.

One of Michelangelo’s recurring themes was the male nude. That the statue of David is meant to depict the hero from the Old Testament, can hardly be seen in it - it is mostly a muscled, nude man in contrapposto. Or take the “Tondo Doni,” a painting of the Holy Family with John the Baptist. In the background, young naked men are hugging each other. Christ on the cross is not just elegant, but sometimes even naked. And what about his love poetry, partly directed to Tommaso dei Cavalieri, for whom Michelangelo drew the suggestive “Jupiter kidnaps Ganymede”?

How did this sensual, sometimes homosensual art relate with the spirit of the times? How could Michelangelo on the one hand hint at gay love and be hired by several popes on the other? Did they see it like this? In his lecture, Krzysztof Dobrowolski-Onclin will explore this theme further, as well as the context in which Michelangelo created his masterpieces.

This lecture on Tuesday, October 4th takes place from 19:30-21:30 at IHLIA, sixth floor of the Central Library OBA / Haasse Vestdijkzaal, Oosterdokskade 143, Amsterdam. The admission is € 15.00, friends of IHLIA and holders of the Amsterdam Stadspas get a 25% discount.
