The twelfth European Drag Olympics will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016, at the Homomonument, Westermarkt in Amsterdam.
The world’s premier sporting event for drags returns to Amsterdam during Europride.
Competitors from around the globe will battle it out for Olympic Gold in the categories Stiletto Sprint, Handbag Toss, Bitch Volleyball and Hula Hoop, along with the newly accredited sport of Tango.
Presentation will be under the capable hands of Marco Hohl and drag celebrity Ellen van Ellende. As dictated by tradition Jennifer Hopelezz, founder of the modern Drag Olympic movement, will light the Olympic Flame, presently on its way from Mount Olympus, Greece. DJ Bo Monde and performances by the crème–de-la–crème of the Dutch drag world will complete this spectacular event.
Hopelezz: “Lolo Benzina will be directing this year’s Olympics which promise to be one of the most spectacular to date. She has been conducting her own outreach program scouting hairdressing salons, beauty spas and five-star resorts throughout the world this past year to find up-and-coming drag athletic talent to compete at the Games.”
“Many competitors have been inspired this year by Caitlyn Jenner, herself an Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete and rumored to be making a surprise appearance. Although the Drag Olympics are officially open to all, there is a little-known clause banning registered Republicans, so she will unfortunately not be able to compete.”
This year’s Gold medalist, along with being decorated with the drag athletic world’s most prestigious award, will also be honored by having the Getto Olympic Burger named after her.
The Games are open to all drag queens & kings, and anyone with heels wanting to take part can join in. Make-up starts at 5 p.m. and the Games begin at 7 p.m. Qualified beauticians will be on hand for any cosmetic assistance or emergency.
