Transmission Exhibition in Amsterdam Museum

by our Editors in Theatre, Art & Expo , 29 december 2015

Untill March 13, 2016, an exhibition with and about transgenders can be visited in the Amsterdam Museum: Transmission. The museum closely cooperated with the trans community in the city to show what is going on in the community. The exhibition shows portraits, personal possessions, and has an audio tour in which transgenders narrate.

Through extensive consultations with the trans community, the Amsterdam Museum hopes that the exhibition will do justice to the very different experiences and views surrounding the theme.

The title Transmission is chosen by Miep (1949). She is the central figure of a photo exhibition by Koos Breukel and Milette Raats. The photographers have been following her since the year she started her transgender programme at hospital VUmc. What does Miep want to say? Courage to live, but also: “I am not transgender but a woman.”

For Miep, Transmission is a designation of an undefined grey zone that has no fixed boundaries, a transition. Such a grey zone is something a lot of people from the transgender community recognise.

In the exhibition, many others besides Miep also speak out. In an audio tour they tell about their experiences near personal objects. This includes BeyonG Veldkamp of COCs TransUnited, who shares her experiences near the hormone tablets she is using. Others contributed objects, such as a fur coat, a toddler dress, or a trans pride flag. They all narrate about their gender, recognition, desires, and feelings of pride.

Contribute and Share Yourself

Over the next month, it will be possible for everyone to make a contribution to the exhibition. Visitors will be invited to share their personal questions, stories and objects with the museum. Mid-January, a selection of the submitted objects and stories will be added to the exhibition.

From October 23, 2015 until March 11, 2016, there will be an opportunity to talk to (hands-on) experts about the theme transgender, from 14:00-15:00. They are looking forward to listening to your views or personal stories. Come to the museum, ask questions, and share your own experiences!

Afterwards, the documentary TransAnders will be shown. In the film, the winner of the best short film at the TranScreen Film Festival 2015, various middle-aged transgender and cross dressers from Amsterdam speak out.
