Multicultural The Hague

Every Thursday night the Melting Pot in the COC in The Hague is simply the gayest party in town. Russian, American, Jewish, Moroccan, Kurdish, Turkish, Surinam, Brazilian, Caribbean, English, German, or plain and simply Dutch, you name it. A gay and lively melting pot of cultures in a relaxed atmosphere, all dancing to a driving salsa or Arabian beat.

Gay Hype

38 year old Harvey, Surinam by birth and Melting Pot organizer, tells us it all began some 6 years ago with the Multi Culti Gay Cocktail Parties, numbering a male/female mix of some 20 visitors. Once discovered by the The Hague incrowd, in no time droves were gathering at the door. As the temperature rose, so did the tempers. One night knives were pulled and the Cocktail Parties were instant history. Luckily the COC was looking for someone to organize a multi cultural activity. At the first pilot party only a couple of visitors showed up. The next party coincided with the famous The Hague Queens’ Birthday Night and literally became an overnight success. The media got the wind of it and soon visitors from all over Holland began showing up. Minor initial problems with agression were soon taken care of by Frits, the sexiest doorman in The Hague. Everybody is welcome, gay, straight, men, women. But leave your agression and drugs behind. Well, some pot, but that’s where The Melting Pot draws the line. Now business is booming and they’re seriously considering buying the building next door to expand the dance floor for instance. Now the The Hague COC is one of the best running COC branches in the country and also one of the wealthiest. The late Pim Fortuyn would have loved them as prime example of successful multi cultural integration. 22 year old Surin was a visitor of the now legendary first flunked pilot party. He thinks he must have been the only visitor there. But since the famous Queens’ B-day Night Party, when crowds suddenly started flocking in, he’s been a regular, revelling in the truly gay atmosphere, in which it’s easy to strike up a conversation with someone, no matter who and races and cultures really mingle. Surinams dance with Turks who dance with Dutch who dance with etc. People from all over Holland, who’d rather die than enter a gay bar, come here and are having a great time. If there’s a place where multi cultural isn’t a mere word, but a relaxed, rich, rewarding experience, it must be the The Hague Thursday Melting Pot Nights!

Melting Pot, Basta, COC Haaglanden.
Thursday from 23.00 till 03.00 hrs.
