Pride at the Homomonument

This Pride’s Friday it was time for the sixth edition of the hilarious Drag Queen Olympics with classic elements like the Stiletto Sprint and the Handbag Throw, and the Tug of ‘Love’, which showed up the girls’ less attractive features. New element this year was the celebration of the ‘Biggest Whore’, a prize awarded by the one and only Dutch sexpert whore Xaviera Hollander, the Happy Hooker herself.

It was rather surprising that both the winner as well as biggest loser of the games this year were not even drag queens in the strict sense. For the first time in the DQO’s history it was a Transgender (in progress). The funny thing was that winner Linda (19) sort of slipped through the admission committee and caused some confusion, as she really looks like a ‘normal’ girl, a beautiful polder lass at that. You see the crowd thinking: how’s all this possible? A girl winning the DQO? “Yes, I must admit I caused some commotion,” Linda laughs; her eyes radiant with naughtiness, but there’s also a serious side to her motivation. “As transgenders we sometimes feel like an illegitimate child within the gay, bisexual and lesbian community. With me taking part I’ve also made our community more visible and present. "

The self-proclaimed biggest loser of the night was mademoiselle Tanya (33) agreed with her successful counterpart. This pot smoking beer drinking rather sad looking impersonation of Aunt Sidonia is trying for Dutch residency. After a short silence she explains she’s from Russia, where gay rights are certainly not considered human rights. “I’ve been beaten up completely three times already, and I was even stabbed with a butcher’s knife once.”

To illustrate her claim she points at an ugly scar in her neck. In spite of her loss tonight she feels she’s gained some respect and sympathy. The new management has brought us some new music as well, the appreciative audience stayed dancing till midnight with top-djs like BoMonde- (Roxy, Getto), Cosmo and Madu playing firm club beats and uplifting house. All in all it was an old-fashioned yet new groovy event.
