De Baarsjes launches Pink Manifest

by Editorial Staff in General , 04 september 2009

Local council de Baarsjes (Amsterdam) has unanimously adopted a motion to develop a manifest on social acceptance. The PvdA (Social Democrats) had taken the initiative for the motion to improve social acceptance and fight homophobia.

COC Amsterdam chair Dennis Boutkan addressed the local council to underline the necessity of the initiative. “The position of gay citizens of Amsterdam is under pressure, so we have to act now to improve visibility and send out a strong signal.”

The motion calls on the board to compose a charter that clearly states the council is working on social acceptance of homosexuality. Chair of the board Lambriex will also start a dialogue with Youth for Christ and other youth assistance groups about this subject. All will be aimed at raising the gay profile.

COC Amsterdam is happy with the promises: “We need to accelerate our activities towards youth work because we are most definitely lagging in that field so we made the deal with the local council to invest in youth projects to battle homophobia, on top of the regular information activities the COC organizes at schools.

COC Amsterdam has conducted a dialogue project together with Youth Spot and we found the youth-workers really need support in addressing homosexuality. COC Amsterdam is approaching all local councils separately. They say that way various initiatives started in Amsterdam tackling social acceptance of gays and lesbians. They say De Baarsjes cannot afford to ignore the estimated 2.200 gays in the neighborhood.

“We see that more and more local councils in Amsterdam are acting firmly now and start project to forward gay emancipation and battle homophobia. Our approach is working, people are taking it seriously,” says Dennis Boutkan.

COC Amsterdam and Social Democrat fraction leader of De Baarsjes, Rik Winsemius, have maintained close contact since Youth for Christ started its work as official youth organization and this is one of the direct results.
