After considering many different options the International Gay and Lesbian Information Center and Archive (IHLIA) and the Public Library of Amsterdam have come to an agreement early March. They’ve agreed that the Amsterdam branch of IHLIA will move into the to be built Central Public Library on the Oosterdokseiland next to Central Station. This is where the books, the grey literature, magazines, audiovisual material, images and cutouts of the Amsterdam division will go.

IHLIA will get their own space on the fifth floor with room for an information desk and study space.
The archive of the Amsterdam IHLIA department will be housed with the International Institute for Social History (IISG). IHLIA will soon also make a deal with the IISG.
The new building of the Central Public Library will be opened on the 7th of July 2007. The Gerard Reve Museum will also move to this building. Last year the library has also bought large parts of the Boudewijn Büch collection from the Bibliotheca Didina et Pinguina at an auction. The cooperation with IHLIA fits perfectly in the library’s strategy to pay special attention to collections for various groups.

Amsterdam has a large gay population and attracts large numbers of gay and lesbian visitors from the rest of Holland and abroad.

The Amsterdam department of IHLIA now still resides in a remote nondescript building in Bos & Lommer. The move to the centrally located Library will improve accessibility and broaden the service.

IHLIA can also more easily draw on the knowledge and professional infrastructure of the Public Library. The new building will also be suitable for exhibitions, conferences, lectures, and cultural performances.
