A Same-Sex Marriage In Pakistan?

It’s common knowledge that at present the Islam regards homosexuality with disfavor. It’s therefore striking when a report surfaces that seems to evoke the Golden Age of Islamic culture, when poets sang the praise of boy love. Early October such a report appeared. It mentioned that in the remote Tirah valley in Pakistan the 42-year-old Liaquat Ali, an Afghan refugee, had fallen in love with 16-year-old Markeen Afridi and married his beloved.

The boy’s parents, who are extremely poor, agreed to the union after Liaquat paid a dowry of 40,000 rupees. The marriage was reportedly held amid the usual pomp and show associated with a traditional tribal wedding.

According to a witness, two hundred people attended the wedding, watching the “bride” arrive in costume on a white horse, as tradition demands. He continued: “I didn’t know Liaquat was going to marry a boy. When we discovered, everyone was taken by surprise and many guests went back without eating the traditional ‘walima’ [feast].”

As news of the scandal leaked out, tribal elders convened an emergency council to decide how to respond to the “immoral and shameful act.” The couple was told to leave Pakistan immediately or be killed.
In the meantime, however, reports have surfaced that this whole story could be propaganda from tribal rivals and that both Liaquat Ali and Markeen Afridi are married men and have kids.
